The Nevada Housing Division offers NVHousingSearch as a means to find affordable apartments and rental homes throughout the state. If your situation is such where you are looking for homeownership opportunities, please know there is a potential solution for you too!
As homeownership increased before the Great Recession, both the U.S. and Nevada reached a low point for percentage of households renting a home in 2006: 38% of Nevada’s households rented a home while for the United States as a whole 32.7% rented. From 2006 the percentage of households renting a home increased until 2014 for Nevada and 2015 for the United States when it reached a high of 46.4% and 37% respectively. The last few years the percentage of households renting has dropped for both regions to 43.4% for Nevada and 36.1% for the United States in 2017 according to Census Bureau estimates.
A new 44-unit affordable senior housing project, the Willie J. Wynn Apartments, broke ground May 21st, 2019 in Reno. Mayor Schieve spoke at the ceremony. Leasing will begin in Spring 2020.
The rate of point-in-time homelessness for the Las Vegas region is the highest in Nevada but has decreased since 2007 whereas in Reno/Sparks the rate has increased, particularly since 2015.
Northern Nevada Community Housing (NNCH) plans a grand opening in June for the Plaza at 4th Street affordable housing project in Reno. The renovation will add 22 more units.
Governor Sisolak and Mayor Scheive were on-hand April 2nd to celebrate the grand opening of Reno's largest new senior affordable property to be built in two decades.
Nevada has only 19 affordable and available homes for each 100 extremely low income renter households. This is the largest deficit in the nation according to the National Low Income Housing Coalition, a housing advocacy organization.
