Rural Nevada Apartment Spotlight:
Larios Arms Apartments, Winnemucca – A Gem for Seniors in Rural Nevada
By Kathleen Eagan, Nevada Rural Housing Authority
It is said that all roads lead through Winnemucca! But long before the interstates and railroads were built connecting America from the east to the west, thousands of emigrants came by wagon trains following the California Trail traveling to the promised farmlands of Oregon and gold strikes in California. After making it through the hot and dusty Great Basin desert, these tired travelers needed to rest, restock and navigate crossing the Humboldt River at a junction first named French Ford before the town officials renamed the growing town after the famous Chief Winnemucca of the Paiute nation.
Modern-day Winnemucca, as the county seat of Humboldt County, is now known for its quality of rural living – fresh air and friendly people surrounded by natural beauty. The town is the heart of county community events from the annual Basque Festival and Cowpoke Grub Cooking Contest, big game hunting, searching for the elusive chukar and weekly rodeo events from Ranch Hands Rodeo to Silver State International Rodeo drawing the top high school rodeo contestants in the West.
Nevada Rural Housing Authority (NRHA) designed and built the beautiful Larios Arms senior multi-family apartment community with 60 one and two-bedroom units in two phases providing affordable housing with attractive exterior and interior features, modern amenities and safety features. Larios Arms I was built in 2012 for residents 55 years and over. Larios Arms II was built in 2016 for residents 62 years and over or disabled regardless of age. Funding for the two-phased project consisted of Nevada Housing Division HOME funds, Low-Income Housing Tax Credits and Project based vouchers
