Gilbert Medina has supported NVHousingSearch.org from the launch onward, helping to make sure that all of Henderson's affordable housing projects are listed. Thank you Gilbert!
When did you first come to Henderson?
I was born and raised in the City of Henderson.
When did you start working as Housing Specialist for City of Henderson and how did you get interested in this job?
I began my career with the City in 1997, starting out in Land Development, then transferring to Parks and Recreation and now in Community Development and Services, Neighborhood Services Division since 2007. I felt that becoming a Housing Specialist II was a great opportunity for me and that I could assist families in the community I was raised in.
What’s the best thing about your job?
Being able to assist families that are in need, such as purchasing a new home, or renovating an existing home and making it safe and energy efficient. Additionally, partnering with local nonprofits to assist with gap financing to develop rental housing for families in need.
Have you seen increasing rents in Henderson lately?
Yes. For affordable housing we have seen some increases but lately these have stabilized. In the general market we are continuing to see increases in rents. New home prices in Henderson are approaching the peaks we saw before the recession. The outskirts of Henderson where there are good schools have seen a lot of competition and it’s hard to even get a house when one goes up for sale.
What is your wish list for affordable housing?
I would like to see our affordable housing market expand outside of downtown area and into west Henderson. Provide mixed income rental properties and making them affordable to qualified families. It always puts a smile on my face when I can give back to our community and making it a place to call home.
